Aspartame is known as a cancer-causing compound in rats. It’s composed of aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. It was approved for food use by the FDA in 1981. The brand names of Aspartame are: NutraSweet, along with Equal, Spoonful, Indulge, Equal-Measure, etc…

Aspartame was discovered by accident in 1965 when a chemist with G.D. Searle Pharmaceutical was testing an anti-ulcer drug. He happened to lick his hand, and the rest is history… Aspartame kills brain neurons. Russell L. Blaylock, professor of neurosurgery at the University of Mississippi’s Medical Center, explains in his book Excito-toxins: The Taste That Kills that though aspartame and glutamate (in the chemically related substance MSG) is a neurotransmitter normally found in the brain and spinal cord.

When aspartame reaches certain levels it causes the death of brain neurons. The risk to infants, children, and pregnant women are higher because the blood/brain barrier, which normally protect the brain, is not fully developed until adulthood.

Dr. Blaylock and numerous other experts believe that long-term exposure to excito-toxins may play a part in diseases such as: Brain lesions and tumors, Early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease, Epilepsy, Hearing problems, Lupus, Memory loss, Multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s Disease.

(2) One study found that high aspartame levels affect cellular enzyme activity, interfering  with antioxidants and with non-nutritive additives like commonly used food coloring agents, found a cumulative effect that increased cellular toxicity to significant levels (Lau et. al., 2006).

No chemicals in our bodies are isolated so compounds such as aspartame will interact with food, alcohol, medicines and environmental toxins in unique and unpredictable ways. We need to minimize chemical soup in our blood.

For two decades the aspartame controversy has continued to simmer, leaving respectable organizations with opposing verdicts. The American Diabetes Association (ADA), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Medical Association (AMA), and the Epilepsy Institute endorse aspartame as safe (though it is a matter of record that several of these organizations have received donation from NutraSweet).

Beware of food products containing these words: “Lite”, “Diet”, “Low-calorie” and “No calorie”.

Among these are: Diet iced teas, Diet soft drinks, Crystal Light, Yogurt lite, Diet Jell-O, Some cereals, and Some children’s vitamins. (3)

The unprecedented number of complaints caused the FDA to call in the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), who concluded that adverse reactions to aspartame were occurring in “unusually sensitive” individuals, but that there was insufficient evidence to prove existence of wide-spread health problems attributable to its consumption.

Are You Toxic Rich Health Poor?

I’m very excited preparing my upcoming presentation “Are You Toxic Rich Health Poor” to my Holistic Moms Network (HMN) group on June 01, 2011. 

Do you agree that our high-tech, fast-paced modern life forces us to stay exposed to pollution and toxins from all kinds 24/7?

There are approximately 80,000 synthetic chemicals registered for use in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that hundreds of these chemicals are present in our bodies. Research has shown that many of these chemicals can disrupt our immune, endocrine, nervous, and reproductive systems.

We all are affected, unless we apply healthy lifestyle tips and strategies to keep ourselves as healthy as possible. This is a fact. During my talk, I’m inviting attendees to imagine seeing themselves in and around the house for one day journey, while together we’ll examine some true  examples directing and leading, unintentionally, to live toxic rich health poor. I’m going to share one example with you: The usage of Non-stick cookware.

Our grand-parents cooked in copper, enamel iron, and/or clay pots. Cooking in these pots give your meal nutrients such as trace minerals. What trace mineral do to you? Let me give you an example: Vanadium and chromium are 2 of minors’ minerals. They balance high blood sugar (diabetes) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) according to Dr. Michael T. Murray, N.D. “Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements”.

Comparing to our convenient lifestyle, most of us preparing meals utilizing non-stick pots.

What’s wrong with non-stick cookware or Teflon? 

Using Teflon cookware releases toxins into the air surrounding you. How?  When the temperature reaches the non-stick coating, it causes the chemical to break down and liberate in the air which make Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) chemical that is easily absorbed by your body. It is a persistent organic chemical used in industrial and consumer goods, including the most nonstick cookware and stain- and water-resistant coatings for carpets and fabrics. Studies have linked this chemical PFOA to a range of health problems, including thyroid disease, infertility in women, and developmental and reproductive problems in lab animals.

There’s no doubt that all of today technology certainly makes our life more convenient. However, it’s taking toll on our health and each of our body reacts differently. For instant, some of us develop high blood pressure. Some others experience heart problems. Others get cancer… while you get migraines!

The learning lesson is to clean your inner body-Detoxification- as you clean it from the outside by taking showers. Ideally, purify or detoxify your inner body is required once or twice a year. Your #1 Enemy!

 

Life changes and stress are fact of life. Too many of us are unaware we’re heavily burdened. The polite word would be stress. However, if stress becomes a constant ongoing cycle, it can crush our spirit and wound our body.

Sharing your pain and frustration is a positive sign. It’s a constructive action step to get stress out  by not letting it damage your inner physiology. As it might be a cause of a migraine.

There’s no doubt that we all are affected and hurt living these trouble times: Poor health, down economy, and global warming crisis. It’s a drastic change that produces a lot of extra stress, worry, and anxiety.

Let’s remain positive and think of change as an opportunity, take advantage of it, and have hope with every step we take. “This is a time when it’s important to count our blessings and focus on what really matters, like maintaining your health. This should be one of your top priorities because without your health, your ability to contribute and logically work through any difficulties that arise will be impaired.”- Dr. David Williams

An example of Dr. Williams quote is when you experience an attack you feel that your ability to handle any situation or problem is almost completely weakened. Understanding that there are two kinds of stress can help you making a good management: 1) Controllable stress, 2) uncontrollable stress.

Speaking of controllable stress, knowing what the cause, becoming aware of how you feel, finding solution, and coping strategy can definitely help you control that stress.

When it comes to uncontrollable stress, I’m going to share with you my secret coping technique. I believe and follow this saying: “If you can’t alter a situation, you must adapt to it since you’re unable to change it.”– Synonym

So, save yourself frustration and anxiousness, and do not add an extra load… exposing yourself to a migraine. Instead, practice to accept your stress until you find a way to get yourself out of it.

She Called Me Saying:”My Migraine Just Came From Nowhere!”

Last couple days in the morning, Rita (45 yr) had to accompany her husband (a handyman) to give him a hand. Once she stepped into their Jimmy truck, Rita got hit by a strong gasoline odor coming out from the lawnmower sitting in the back of the truck that needs to be taken to the repair. Rita opened all windows, including the back upper glass door of the truck to get some fresh air while driving.

In the afternoon, Rita started to feel ‘extreme thirst’. No matter how much water she would drink, it was never enough to fill up her thirst. Furthermore, that night she didn’t sleep well, felt irritable and not herself. Next day, she spent her whole day as usual in her office working behind the computer. The following morning, she woke up with a bad headache-migraine. She didn’t know why she got it, so she called me saying: “My migraine just came from nowhere”.

After a very short Q&A, Rita and I discovered the cause behind her unknown migraine source. It was the inhaling of the gasoline chemical. This contact was enough to affect her nervous system (NS) as well as the long exposure of (EMF) electromagnetic field from working the whole day behind her computer.

Rita could have kept the migraine away by taking immediately the “4Bs” right after she inhaled the gasoline chemical, or once she experienced the extreme thirst- one of the First Signs of a migraine Set Off stage. What Could Be Behind Your Depression?

 

You may or may not notice that sometimes before you get a migraine, you experience a period of depression. This could last for 1 day or so, then, you got hit by an attack…

One of the reasons behind your depression can be:  Allergy!

You may be allergic to one or more kinds of foods, chemical substances, dust… that your body CAN’T tolerate and can cause you a migraine. Speaking of food allergy reaction, it can appear directly after consuming a specific food, or it can be manifested after 1-3 days.

Do you relate to this depression pattern?  

Day # 1: You enjoy or crave your favorite food without YOU knowing that it causes you a migraine.

Day #2 to 3: You feel blue, depressed, lost of drive, and other symptoms may take place as well.

What is the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)?

Among the body’s systems is one of paramount importance: the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), which controls many of the body’s major functions automatically without any conscious input from you. It’s a regulatory branch of the central nervous system that helps people adapt to changes in their environment. It adjusts or modifies some functions in response to stress.

There are two divisions of the ANS: The sympathetic and the parasympathetic. ANS acts through a balance between these two components and it helps regulate:

  • Blood vessels’ size and blood pressure
  • The heart’s electrical activity and ability to contract
  • The bronchium’s diameter (and thus air flow) in the lungs

You and I know that migraine pain is caused by a change in blood vessels size in the skull constricted or dilated blood vessels.

Medically, there are many tests of the ANS. Most of them are easy to perform but hard to interpret individually. So far, there’s no cure for autonomic disorders. Still, several physical measures and drugs can help people with autonomic failure prevent low blood pressure or feel less uncomfortable during episodes.

Holistically, in order for the ANS to function correctly, part of which is body-healing and rebuilding, the autonomic nervous system needs to be supplied with real foods – the true nutrients- proteins, fats, and minerals provided by real whole foods and if these are not provided, the autonomic nervous system cannot do its job.

So in migraine cases, it could be Sympathetic or Parasympathetic autonomic nervous system dominance.

We tend to become more and more house-bound and avoid sun exposure especially as we get older, so our skin gets thinner and less efficient at converting cholesterol to Vitamin D.

Not only that we prevent sunrays from penetrating our body system to be converted by our liver into Vitamin D but we’re keeping ourselves away from tremendous health benefits like preventing Osteoporosis, depression and cancer; purifying our body, helping to prevent high blood pressure, cold and flu and multiple sclerosis.

Sun appears daily in our life to lighten up our world. This is a reality. It’s a must for every being on earth; human, animal and plants. It gives energy, without it there would be no life: if there’s no sunlight there would be no food to grow; it is a necessity for the body to function and obtain energy.

Over the last several decades the public has been led to believe that exposure to sunlight is harmful. We’ve been told to avoid sunlight and slather on sunscreen every day before sun exposure.

Sunlight produces UVA and UVB rays. It is the UVA rays that are responsible for vitamin D production in your body. So it is now recommended to allow the sun to shine on your skin for at least 20 to 30 minutes before putting on any sunscreens. It is impossible to get too much vitamin D from the sun.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in very few foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement.

Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption in the gut and maintains adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations to enable normal mineralization of bone. It is also needed for bone growth and bone remodeling by osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Without sufficient vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or misshapen. Together with calcium, vitamin D also helps protect older adults from osteoporosis.

Vitamin D sufficiency prevents rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.

Vitamin D has other roles in the body, including modulation of cell growth, neuromuscular and immune function, and reduction of inflammation.

The intensity of UVB rays is also reduced by clouds, pollution and UVB will not travel through glass, so sitting next to a window will not give you enough sunlight to make vitamin D.

Source of V.D: There are food sources for vitamin D such as salmon, cod liver oil and fortified foods but researchers are now showing this is not enough. Supplementation is recommended, especially in the winter months. Most supplements may or may not be strong enough and some individuals are sensitive to vitamin D supplements.

Lots of people with hypothyroidism (low thyroid function) are misdiagnosed. They experience various symptoms without realizing that they are a thyroid-related issue- yet you hear your doctor saying your thyroid was tested normal.

An estimated 27 million American have a thyroid disease, and more than half are undiagnosed. Frequently misunderstood, and too often overlooked and misdiagnosed. Thyroid disease affects almost every aspect of health, so understanding more about the thyroid, and the symptoms that occur can help you protect or regain good health. The vast majority is: Hypothyroid – under functioning, slow or sluggish thyroid.

Your thyroid is a gland. It’s located in the throat on your vocal cords. It has a shape of a butterfly. Your Thyroid is considered a master gland; it affects every cell in your body. It works as a thermostat because your body needs a constant level of heat to function properly and vigorously.

The thyroid controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins, and controls how sensitive the body should be to other hormones.

The thyroid gland participates in these processes by producing thyroid hormones. These hormones regulate the rate of metabolism and affect the growth and rate of function of many other systems in the body.

Do you know that a morning headache or migraine is one symptom of low thyroid function (Hypothyroidism)?

Another symptom of low thyroid besides migraines is fatigue. The source of energy in our body comes from two glands: The Thyroid and the adrenal glands. The healthier these glands are, the better your energy level will be. The weaker they are the poorer your energy level will be. These two glands are called the energizing partners.

Have you ever felt stressed and tired along with a wired-sensation that won’t go away? This is the sign of adrenal malfunction that affects the thyroid function.

Thyroid Blood Tests

The most common test for thyroid function is the TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) test. The TSH measures a chemical sent by the pituitary gland in the brain, which relays orders to the thyroid gland about how much thyroid hormone the body needs at a given time. However, in many studies and medical experiences TSH is not the most accurate indicator of a thyroid problem.

The following panel of laboratory tests can give you the best reading:

  • TSH — This is the BEST test. However, beware most all of the “normal” ranges are simply dead wrong. The ideal level for TSH is between 1 and 1.5 mIU/L (milli-international units per liter)
  • Free T4 and Free T3. The normal level of free T4 is between 0.9 and 1.8 ng/dl (nanograms per deciliter). T3 should be between 240 and 450 pg/dl (picograms per deciliter).
  • Thyroid antibodies, including thyroid peroxidase antibodies and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies. This measure helps determine if your body is attacking your thyroid, overreacting to its own tissues (i.e., autoimmune reactions). Physicians nearly always leave this test out.
  • For more difficult casesTRH can be measured (thyroid releasing hormone) using the TRH stimulation test. TRH helps identify hypothyroidism that’s caused by inadequacy of the pituitary gland.

Why Are You Keep Getting Migraines in Spite of What You’re Taking or Doing?

A 2004 article suggested that there are almost 20 million migraine attacks happening every day. You’re still getting migraines because what you’re taking is not working, and your body is, however, talking to you through your unbearable pain and symptoms while it keeps receiving the wrong needs.

Eventually, you keep searching around to find some kind of relief that can reduce the excruciating pain. It’s pretty easy to get a pain relief pill and take it once you’re in pain, but keep in mind that you’re suppressing the symptoms rather than addressing the cause.

Following this routine and cycle, you’re not only calming or reducing the pain, but you’re making it worse. Your migraines keep coming back sooner and stronger with no mercy while they create more damage to your body systems. Even more health symptoms will  manifest themselves down the road.

Migraine pain initiates once your Nervous System (NS) is out of balance where your blood vessels change their size in your skull. This is the original cause of your horrible unbearable pain (the throbbing and pounding sensation). Now, taking any pain reliever that is not addressing this area won’t do the job.

But… the biggest task is to discover, address, and correct the other underlying root reasons that cause the Nervous System (NS) to be out of balance. Well, stick with me and you’ll be moving forward on your pain-free journey one step at a time.
